The Montjuïc Stadium was projected by the architect Pere Domènech i Roura and was inaugurated in 1929 for the International Exposition of Barcelona.
In the '60's it started to be clear that their were disturbing symptoms of ruin. With the celebration of the Olympic Games in 1992, it was remodeled, under the direction of the architects Frederic Correa i Ruiz, Alfons Milà i Sagnier, Joan Margarit, Carles Buixadé and the participation of Vittorio Gregotti.
In this remodulation it was completely empty, conserving only the exterior façades, and new stands were lifted for a capacity of 77,000 spectators (with the provisional stands). Currently it fits 55,000 people.
In 1989 it was reopened for the World Cup Athleticism, and in 1992 it was a stage for the
ceremonias de inauguración
and the closing of the Olympics.
