Among the three hundred diners that fill this 30-year-old restaurant every day, you may spot the King of Spain, movie stars, and politicians.
Botafumeiro has to be a well-oiled machine to keep all and sundry happy and coming back for more, and it does. The decor is so traditional, with wood railings and banisters, white table linens, and nautically-themed art and objects.
The menu focuses on the sea, try Frutos del Mar (fruits of the sea) for two to start, followed by Caldeirada del Pescador (Portuguese fisherman's stew) with white beams or one of the barbecued fish, then a dessert of Belgian chocolate volcano with chocolate sherbet. Wine list is an ambassador for Spanish wines.
Larger groups info A restaurant like Botafumeiro will take just about any size of group in its stride and give your event a professional sheen. There are five private rooms, seating up to fifty apiece, each with the same sea-going decor as the main restaurant. Botafumeiro's leading light, Moncho Neira, keeps his restaurant humming with vast amounts of food, nautically-dressed waiters who are quick on their feet, and comfortable ambience.
In this seafood eatery, meat-eaters are not left out; no one is left out. The menu includes the freshest ingredients available: the starter of octopus Feira style, main course of grouper in cider, or paella, and sweet of orange custard with vanilla coulis. There are also steaks, veal, pork, and goat dishes.
