A longtime favourite of Barcelonans, from the 1920s until the next century, probably, El Gran Cafè restaurant feels every bit like a Parisian Art Nouveau brasserie. The Modernista style is glamorous, with red velvet curtains, original paintings, statuettes, grand brass chandeliers, soaring pillars, live piano in the evenings and a balcony from which to survey the scene. You'll feel as if you're on a movie set. The menu is a careful selection of traditional Catalan dishes like Paella Costa Brava and French ones like steak tartare. People tend to return again and again, not least because the prices are moderate and the service superb.
Larger groups info: Everyone knows El Gran Cafè, as it has been a Barcelona landmark since their grandmothers knew Picasso. The decor is so charming, with its authentic Modernista style, and the service so excellent that it leaves diners free to concentrate on enjoying themselves. There are several private rooms tucked away here and there, seating between 15 and 80 people maximum, so that there is bound to be a perfect space for your birthday, celebration, or corporate entertaining. Set menus includes dishes like Payes bread with smeared tomato, appetizers of baby squid Andalusian style, main course of duck confit with gratin potatoes and dessert, chocolate with strawberries caramel. Fine wines. Great ambience.
