If, in the midst of the Old City, you fancy some Basque cuisine in an informal setting, the Sagardi Euskal Taberna is a fine choice. The décor is both modern and traditional, but then, that is surely the definition of Barcelona style, and its name translates as a place where cider is served. Set in a the lower level of a 16-century building (Gothic painting was discovered on the walls) the popular bar area is typically Basque, serving the wine of the region. The focus of the dining room must surely be the three enormous barrels from which you drink as much cider as you like. Classic tapas are on offer, as well as homemade wild duck pâté, fish and meat cooked on the open grill.

Larger groups info:
A very central meeting place for your group or guests, Sagardi Euskal Taberna is a welcoming, un-starchy setting in which to meet or entertain. Great for celebrations of family or friends, the Taberna's lower-ground dining room features an open grill and three hulking barrels full of cider, a bottomless glass to diners. No private room, so enjoy the lively ambience. The bar is a student favourite, and lovers of tapas include this among their stops. Dishes include tapas and regional specialties, especially grilled fish and meat, txuleton of ox, and rib of Iberian pig. Enjoy both the ciders and the selection of regional wines.
