Just off the leafy Ramblas, Barcelona's most famous street and its heaving throngs of humanity, you'll find Irati Taverna Basca, a bastion of authentic cooking. You'll be greeted by a mile-long bar with belting ambience, piled with Pintxas, a smorgasboard of tapas-style bits. You take a plate and munch away, charged by the number of toothpicks you've amassed. In the rustic dining room with its half-timbered and brick walls, there's proper table service. Try dishes like seabass filled with Ratatouille, wrapped in a crepe, then grilled and baked. The Txacoli wines are poured from above the waiters' heads to aerate properly. Enjoy the show.
Larger groups info: The buzz here is already good, so when you book in your group of up to eight, you know the meal will go splendidly. A great choice for birthdays, family celebrations, or just gatherings of friends. Warning or invitation: the Irati bar has made its way onto some stag weekend itineraries. The authentically Basque dishes include gifts from the sea, like the Chicharro, a northern fish, grilled and cooked and served with squid and oyster sauce. It may be a requirement to order the Txacoli and for the entire table to ooh and aah as the waiter pours it from a great height.
