La Plaza Monumental (Monumental Ring), work of the architects
Manuel Raspall
,
Domènec Sugrañes
and
Ignasi Mas i Morell
, was inaugurated on 12 of April of 1914 with the name "El Sport".
It is built by brick, with a style mixed with Mudéjar (Arabic word meaning ´domesticated´) and Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire) and is located in the Eixample. It is, in this day, the only ring of Barcelona where there is still bullfighting matches performed, since the disappearance of
Plaza de El Torín
and of
Plaza de las Arenas
.
Apart from the bullfighting events, the Monumental is also the stage for occasional musical events and of circus shows. In the interior of the Monumental there is the Museo Taurino de Barcelona (Bullfighting Museum).
The bullfighting season in this plaza commences in April and extends up to the end of September, celebrating approximately 25 acts every year. The best shows tend to have dates in July and September, coinciding with the festivals of the Patrons of the city, the Virgin Mercè.
