Joan Miró Park (or the "Escorxador Park") is well known for its big sculpture of Dona i Ocell (Woman and Bird), and was designed by the renowned Catalan architects, Antoni Solanas, Màrius Quinatana, Beth Galí and Andreu Arriola and was inaugurated in 1983. With a surface, close to five hectares it is situated in the Eixample district, and has small woodland areas and gardens with Mediterranean vegetation and other adapted species, as well as some artificial ponds. It also contains a children´s area, a public library and a sports centre, amongst other equipment. As such, the undisputable protagonist of the vicinity is the spectacular Dona i Ocell, by Joan Miró. The park was constructed in the area where the old slaughterhouse (in Catalan ´escorxador´) used to occupy, and was converted, in this way in the first park designed over a space occupied by urban out of use installations.
