The Ayuntamiento de Barcelona (City Council of Barcelona) is the administration with political responsibility, together with the General Administration of the State, the
Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Barcelona), and the
Diputació de Barcelona (Delegation of Barcelona). It has its historic origins in the
Consell de Cent.
From 1979 its politicians in charge are chosen by universal suffrage by the citizens registered in the city with right to vote, in celebrated elections every four years.
At present the mayor is Jordi Hereu, who replaced Joan Clos at the beginning of September, 2006, after he was renowned Minister of Industry in the central government.
The City Council has his head office in the Sant Jaume square of Barcelona, just in front of the Palace of the Generalitat (Palace of the Government of Barcelona).
