Though Mozart's concert arias are among the least familiar facets of his output, we find in them two of his prime qualities: theatricality and virtuosity. At 18th century concerts, singers -especially sopranos- were the prime attraction. Mozart wrote a whole series of arias and concert scenes in the course of his life for the specific purpose of enabling them display their talents. In a letter to his father written in Mannheim in 1778 he said that «every singer needs a different aria, just as he or she needs a different outfit». This conviction led him to compose a vast array of insertion and replacement arias suited to the individual skills and abilities of the singers who took part in the reprises of his operas. Moreover, though he sometimes denied it, he also composed some highly successful arias for operas by other composers, including Cimarosa, Anfossi and the Valencian Vicent Martí i Soler. This recital by soprano Edita Gruberova gives us a chance to discover a few of these arias which Mozart wrote so that the finest sopranos of his era could show off their accomplishments.
