La Bayadère was first performed on 4 February 1877 to tremendous acclaim at the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Ludwig Minkus, Marius Petipa and the prima ballerina Ekaterina Vazem won an interminable ovation. The grand pas classique of the scene entitled «The Kingdom of the Shades» had already entered dance history.
The great Romantic ballet, staged with all the sumptuous magnificence of the Russian Imperial Ballets, had scored an unquestionable triumph.
Partially inspired by the real-life bayadères, or professional ballerinas, of Hindu temples, the work includes nearly all the elements from which Romanticism derived inspiration: the fascination of the Orient, a tragic love triangle, and a supernatural being incarnating the ideal woman, in this case the spirit of the bayadère, who sacrifices herself for love.
Ángel Corella will act in the functions of The Bayadère of 9 of July at 8 pm and of 11 July at 10 pm. The rest of functions will be interpreted by others first dancers of their company.
