Josep Maria Sostres Maluquer was born in the Seu d'Urgell in 1915, was a rationalist architect educated in Barcelona and cofounder of the Group R, renovator of the post-war architecture.

In 1946 he graduated as architect in the Univeristy of Barcelona and specialised in the construction of single-housing dwellings. In his first phase, his works were based on traditional elements constructed with natural materials. He worked in the areas like Bellver of Cerdaña and Barcelona, where he projected the Casa Elías and the Casa Cusí, respectively.

Sostres formed part of the team that, in 1949, won the contest of economic Vivienda (Housing) in Barcelona.

At the end of the decade of the ´50´s he entered in a new artistic stage, more modern, that corresponds buildings such as the Casa Agustí en Sitges, (1953-1955), the Casa Iranzo in Esplugues of Llobregat (1957) or the repair of the building of El Noticiero Universal – The Universal News - (1963-1965, FAD prize in 1966).

In 1962 he was designated the history of architecture professor in the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (Superior Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona) and in 1972 he won the National Prize of Architecture.

He died in Barcelona in 1984.
