Kim Deal, the only female member of the Pixies, has always been a woman to be reckoned with. She formed The Breeders in 1989 with Throwing Muses' Tanya Donelly because they were both tired of playing a secondary role in their respective bands. A year later they released their debut album 'Pod', a polished and innovative record, produced by Steve Albini. After the break up of the Pixies in 1992, Kim threw herself 100 percent into her new group which now included her twin sister, Kelley, and which, after the release of the EP 'Safari' that same year, saw the departure of Donelly. In 1993 they recorded 'Last Splash' and conquered the world with the enduring hit 'Cannonball' (Who could forget that base line?). The Breeders went on to support Nirvana (Kurt Cobain confessed to being a huge fan), and sold more than two million copies of their album, which proved to be one of the high points of nineties indie music. This dazzling success was followed by a long period of touring which eventually took its toll when Kelley was admitted to a rehab clinic and the band drifted apart. Eight years later, in 2002, when nobody was expecting a comeback, The Breeders showed there was life in them yet with the release of 'Title TK', an album which was not so much a comeback as a brilliantly defiant and surprising statement of survival. Now, after another six-year absence and amid the surprise resurgence of the Pixies, the Deal sisters have returned with a new album, 'Mountain Battles', and just as much energy on stage as ever.
