Lukas Woller, Tom English, Duncan Lloyd, Archis Tiku and Paul Smith started out in 2001. They were playing in small clubs and produced their own single. This first 7" ended up in the hands of Steve Beckett, head of Warp, the electro label par excellence which is now getting more and more into guitars, and it was at Warp that they would produce their first album, 'A Certain Trigger' (2005), a perfect record of urgent pop and passionate songs comparable to those of Pulp or The Voidoids. Once they had become popular they got themselves on the covers of several music magazines, racked up hit after hit and even a Mercury Prize nomination. They haven't stopped touring since and have developed a captivating live show which highlights the charisma of their leader Paul Smith who is like Jarvis Cocker's wild twin. On their second album, produced by Gil Norton (of Pixies and Foo Fighters fame), they wanted to experiment and not stick to a formula. 'Our Earthly Pleasures' (2007) is both adventurous and controversial and according to Smith himself sounds "like a hybrid of Smashing Pumpkins and The Smiths". Earthly pleasures indeed.
