Antoni Maria Gallissà i Soqué, architect representative of the Catalan modernism, was born in Barcelona in 1861. His style was very personal and it was based on the typical architecture of the Catalan pairal houses and an exhaustive use of the decoration. Also, he is known for his designs of furniture, mosaics and ceramics, or even of flags and banners.

He studied in the School of Architecture of Barcelona, in which he graduated in 1885 and later got out of debt as a professor. His political activism inside the Catalan nationalism very common between the artists of his era, leading him to take part in the writing of the Bases of Manresa and to preside, the Catalan Union in 1897.

Between his architectural works, standouts are the reform of the Gallissà House (his own housing) and the Riba House, both in Barcelona, or also the Pujol House in Esplugues de Llobregat. Also, he designed designed the flag of Orfeó Català and the system of illumination of Fernando street.

Also, it is necessary to highlight his collaboration with the architect, also modernist, Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the achievement of works as the Palau of the Catalan Music or the Castell dels Tres Dragons (currently the Museum of Zoology of Barcelona).

He died in Barcelona in 1903, when only he was 42 years old.
