Dau al Set was an artistic avant-garde movement that arose in Barcelona in October, 1948 of the artists' hand of recognised prestige as the poet Joan Brossa, the philosopher Arnau Puig and the painters Joan Ponç, Modest Cuixart, Antoni Tàpies and Joan-Josep Tharrats, then, young artists interested in the universal currents.

Their name, which provided also the title of the magazine across of which the art of this movement spread, makes reference to the seventh side of the dice and demonstrates, this way, the ground-breaking spirit of the group.

In a beginning, one placed the group inside the dadaism movement, but Dau al Set moved between the hyperrealism, the surrealism and the existentialism. Finally, it created a proper style, close to the surrealism magic, across which they promoted the Catalan artistic and cultural renewal.

The group ended up splitting in 1954, only six years after their appearance. Nevertheless it is considered to be the first big reference of culture of resistance from Spanish postwar period, opposite the prevailing ideology in Spain. Also, it threw an essential role over a cliff for the entry of the avant-garde in Spain, which was consolidated in the middle of the 50's.
