The Casa Golferichs (Golferichs House), projected by the architect
Joan Rubió i Bellver following a commission of the Barcelonan engineer Macari Golferichs, was constructed in 1901.
As such, this dwelling, situated in the Eixample district, was designed in respect of the desires of its owner: live in a Modernist building with sumptuous ceramic finishing and stunning woods. Rubió i Bellver projected a house that broke the definite uniformity for the contiguous buildings and which, shortly, gained a special mention in the annual prize of the
Ayuntamiento de Barcelona (City Council).
It was the first great work of the architect and since then started his own architectural line and updating the Gothic forms and investigating with the materials and the constructive techniques.
The Golferichs family lived in the house till the start of the Civil War, when it was confiscated by the Libertarians, who wanted to convert it in to a popular university. After the war it was handed over to the religious order of the Dominiques of the Presentation, who installed a school.
In the ´70´s a construction company bought the estate with the objective to construct dwellings, but the strong neighbouring opposition, who were afraid to lose a symbolic building of the district, forced the City Council to purchase the building and restore it. The architects Pere Joan Revetllat and Carme Ribas were in charge of the restoration.
Since 1989, it acts as the exhibition hall and the auditorium of the Centre Cultural i Cívic Golferichs - El Xalet.
