The Institute of North American Studies of Barcelona (IEN) was founded in the year 1951 as a private affiliation, without fortitude of lucre, destined to promote the cultural exchange, from Catalonia, with the United States of America.

The IEN makes a cultural bridge with the United States and they take to term a great variety of activities that include the projection of full-length films, musical performances, visual arts exhibitions, seminars and conferences. To continue with the work and to reach the institutional targets the Institute has been constituted, in the year 2006, as "Private Foundation Institute of North American Studies ".

But the principal activity is the education of the North American language and the culture, by means of an education system of based on the interaction in class between the teacher and the pupil. This direct formula of personal relation is the most rapid and effective for learning of the language.
