Eixample is the extension of Barcelona projected by Ildefons Cerdà which started in 1860. A very particular project inside the town planning and social European context. The character of the city is situated in a certain part of the weave of the widening.

The Eixample is the bourgeois area of Barcelona, the new zone, and of concentrated wealth and commerce. Around the Paseo de Gràcia, the most privileged area, you find the Quadrat d'Or (Golden Square), delimited to the left by Aribau street and on the right by the Paseo de Sant Joan.

The Golden Square was established as the bourgeois center of the new Barcelona at the end of the XIXth century and beginning of the XXth, simultaneously that Modernism was arising the as form of architectural expression. So this zone turned into the maximum reference point of Catalan Modernism of Barcelona.

Palau Baró de Quadras (1904-1906) – Squared Baró Palace
It has two façades: one of the Diagonal Avenue, and other one of the Roussillon street, with a typology of multi-family housing.

Casa Terrades (1903-1905) – Terrades House
Solar property of the Terrades sisters, this house includes three multi-family dwellings. It is better known as "Casa de les Punxes" (Punxes House).

Casa Amatller (1898-1900) – Amatller House
The porter´s lodge and the principal flat have essential decorations for visitors interested in modernism. The façade is staggered.

Casa Batlló (1904-1906) – Batlló House
Designed integrally and of rigorous form by the very same Antoni Gaudí, from the façade up to the interior details, like the furniture.

Casa Lleó Morera (1902) – Lleó Morera House
Work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, was awarded the Architectural prize by the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona (City Council) in 1906.

Casa Milà (1906-1912) – Milà House
Known as La Pedrera, was the last apartment building made by Gaudí and is considered the exlibris of this genre. It is World Heritage Site since 1984.

Casa Macaya (1901-1902) – Macaya House
The façade and the distribution of the ground floor of this so well-known work is projected as if it was a question of a single-family house. Elements of interior decoration survive in the foyer with tiles and sgrafitto, and in the court with covered stairs.

Antigua Casa Montaner i Simón (1880-1885) – Montaner i Simón Ancient House
Constructed by Domènech i Montaner to lodge the publishing house Montaner i Simón, the most novel architectural skills was applied of the change of century, like the structural value of the iron. It was rehabilitated in 1987 by Roser Amadó i Lluís Domènech. To receive the head office of Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
