The Casa Macaya, Modernism building in the Barcelonan district of the Eixample, was projected by
Josep Puig i Cadafalch and constructed in 1901.
Its façade, of great beauty, is decorated with white stuccoes and sgrafitto in ochre colour and in it there is an abundance of stone sculptures, situated in the windows, the balcony and the stand is asymmetric of the lower floor. Worthy of a mention is the cyclist figure, sculpted in the capital of the left part of the main entrance, that makes reference to Puig i Cadafalch, who was simultaneously constructing the
Casa Amatller and the bike was moved between the two works.
As such the standout elements are the foyer, profusely ornamented with sgrafitto and tiles, and in the interior patio, features a magnificent staircase.
Eusebi Arnau and Alfons Juyol as sculptors, Joan Paradís as the sgrafitto artist, and Manuel Ballarín for the forging jobs with active collaboration with Puig i Cadafalch in the construction of this house.
It was declared Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (for the Good of Cultural National Interest) by the
Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia) in 1976.
