Fernando Botero, renown painter and sculptor, was born in Medellín (Colombia) in 1932.
His artistic activities commenced in 1948, as illustrator of the newspaper El Colombiano and, that same year, achieved his first joint exposition in his home town. Three years later, in Bogotá. He exposed in solitary for the first time.
After graduating in Liceo de la Universidad de Antioquia, in Medellín, he transferred to Barcelona and, later on, to Madrid, to continue his painting studies, specifically in the Academia de San Fernando de Madrid. In this period he dedicated himself to study and copy the work of Velázquez and Goya.
Between 1953 and 1957, he travelled to France, Italy, Mexico and United States. In the first phase, his painting was characterised by very loose brushstrokes, which little by little became filled, at the same time that his utilised perspective was being arbitrated.
In the beginning of the 60's he transferred to New York, where he acquired great popularity and later on, in 1973, he became established in Paris, where he initiated his sculptor facet.
From the 80's, he was converted in to one of the most highly paid living artists of the moment. Between his works, worthy of a mention are the La alcoba nupcial, Mona Lisa at the age of twelve and El quite.
His paintings as well as his sculptures are of a figurative style and represent, predominately, human and animal figures, always obese.
In Barcelona, some of the Colombian´s works can be observed, as part of the urban path of the city. Standout is the El Gato (The Cat), fountain of a strong polemic due to the location that caused the wrath of Botero with the City Council of the city.
