The Mercat de Sarrià (Sarrià Market), with its nearly 2,300 square metres in surface, was constructed in 1911 and, thus, forms part of the group of century old markets in the city.
It is a bare brick wall building with a rectangular level quite odd compared to the ones constructed in the same era, which permits a commercial structure with various walkways and large commercial venues.
The highest façade of the market is of pyramid form. In its central part, it presents 22 rectangular stained glass windows, which supplies the market with a great part of its natural illumination and, in the superior part, seven great pillars functioning as decorative elements.
In relation to its history, the origins of this market stem back to 1900, the year where the first market project for the district was achieved which, finally, did not go ahead. A few years later, in 1909, the passage of the Reina Elisenda till Pedralbes was opened, of which this avenue was elected, in 1910, so the architects Marcel•lí Coquillat and Arnaldo Calvet could design a market project in the municipal of Sarrià.
Although it experienced an important modernisation in 1967, the Sarrià market was reopened in September 2007 after an important reform that introduced a pioneer service of the vicinity: now, the venues dispose of workshops and degustation spaces.
As well, the renovation presumed the demolishment of the existing stairs of one of its entrances and the suitableness of the market for the clients of reduced mobility, by means of the installation of an elevator.
As well a new recycling and reutilising system was incorporated and a small parking with a 20 car space capacity.
