The Mercat de Ciutat Meridiana (Ciutat Meridiana Market) was constructed in 1968, responding to the necessity for the supply of fresh produce to the city folk that were starting to inhabit this new and popular district of Barcelona.
The large immigration, originating from other places of the country that Barcelona experienced in the ´60´s provoked a strong expansion of the city and an excessive demographic increase in the more outlying suburbs, like Ciudad Meridiana, which commenced to reclaim equipment.
In 2001, 33 years after its opening, an integral remodelling of the market was achieved with the objective of modernising its installations and services, as the clientele became more and more demanding. In this way, an auto-service to the traditional offering was added and new technologies were introduced such as the Internet.
The renovation also responded to the help of the
Ayuntamiento de Barcelona
(City Council) to convert the market in to an element of social energising for the suburb.
