The Mercado of Sant Andreu (Sant Andreu Market or ´St. Andrew´s Market), with 1,700 square metres in surface, finished construction in 1914. Of the same method as the other century old markets of the city, its structure is of iron, with bare brick wall coating.
The origin of this market we find it in the mid previous century, with the construction of the project for the gorgeous plaza Mercadal (´market place´) in 1850. Like its name indicates, it was foreseen that this square would accommodate commercial activities of the district and, of which, from the moment that the construction of the emblematic portico square was finished, the rural workers and other merchants started to meet in this place to sell their wares, while they waited for the building which, until this day, accommodates the descendants of the first merchants.
The Sant Andreu Market is the market of the district by excellence and acts also as the social centre and a meeting place for locals. It also participates very actively in activities of the suburb.
Since its inauguration the market has received some renovations, in 1989, for example, the dome was renewed as well as the exterior paint.
