Matías Colmenares Errea was born in Estella, Navarra and was an architect. In his homeland he constructed the Bullfighting Ring, the first Barracks of the Civil Guard (Police Force) and the first kiosk.

He moved to Barcelona and he was an associate of the RCD Espanyol. Later he was entrusted the construction of the Stadium of Sarrià in the properties of La Manigua de Can Ràbia, being the first placed stone on 31 December 1922. The plan that he designed envisaged the stadium with a capacity of 40,000 spectators.

The works were meant to start on January 1923, but the contracted construction broke and the project that Colmenares designed was not seen finalised completely until the World Cup of 1982.

In fact, in the 30's, Sarrià would receive approximately 15,000 spectators, much far from the initial plan. Colmenares was shot by republican militiamen during the Civil war.
