Antoni Amatller i Costa was born in Barcelona in 1851, son of the chocolate businessman Molins de Rei Gabriel Amatller.
The small artisan chocolate industry grew with time and when he was 19 years old, the family sends the young Antoni on a formative trip overseas, where he visited the main Swiss and French chocolate factories.
In 1872 Amatller takes the family business and, six years later, inaugurates the factory of Sant Martí of Provençals. The investment in modern machinery and the use of new advertising techniques impels the commercial expansion of the Amatller Chocolates brand. In parallel with these successes, Amatller cultivates his great passion like photography, the collection of art works, hiking and travel. These disciplines mark his personal evolution and have a big influence in his only daughter,
Teresa Amatller, who will be the legacy of the enterprising spirit of her father, who passed away in 1910.
The legacy of his trajectory can be contemplated today in the
Casa Amatller (Amatller House), in the
Paseo de Gràcia.
