Kenji Imai was born in Tokyo on 11 of January of 1895 and graduated as an architect at the University of Waseda in 1919. He arrived in Barcelona shortly after the death of Gaudí and visited the construction of the Sagrada Familia with the company of Domènech Sugrañes.

He returned to Japan where he continued to study ´gaudiniana´ architecture and in 1928 and in 1933 he presented photographic expositions of Gaudí buildings. He returned to the University of Waseda where since 1952 occupied Cátedra. A part from his work as architect, he published architectural drawings and commentaries of Gaudí.

He constructed the Memorial Chapel of Nagasaky (Saint Philip of Jesus Church), where one can note clear ´gaudiniana´ influences.

He also was the president of Friends of Gaudí in Japan. He passed away in Tokyo on 20 of May 1987.
