Inaugurated on 26 June of 1900, together with the Plaça de Espanya, the bullfighting ring, Las Arenas (The Sands) had a capacity of 14,893 spectators, work by the architect Augusto Font i Carreras.

It was considered the bullring of Joselito "El Gallo" (The Cock), and over here the best bullfighters of the era passed through here (Bombita, Machaquito, Rafael El Gallo, Vicente Pastor, Belmonte...)

Also, a few months after its opening, Domingo del Campo "Dominguín" died in this ring.

This bullring closed in 1977, and in its place a recreation centre would be born, with 12 movie theatres from the Grup Balaña, incidentally a group who was traditionally famous with the bullfighting tradition in Barcelona.
