Apel•les Mestres i Oño was born in Barcelona in 1854 and was a writer that conceived the book as a global art from. He drew and was also a musician.

As a writer he cultivated diverse genres: poetry, theatre, prose, narration, that fused with his work of illustrator, which made him worth the recognition of the public ´s critique.

In 1908 he was sworn with the title of Maestro (Teacher) in Gayo Saber, on having gained three ordinary awards of the Juegos Florales (Floral Games).

His major works are Vosiscum and Liliana. In many of his pieces, lyrical as well as dramatic, he put music of Enric Granados, Amadeu Vives, Enric Morera or Josep Rodoreda.

He cultivated the musical composition, with frequency and with his own lyrics that later on would be made popular by Emili Vendrell and Conchita Badia.

Apel•les was an independent artist, although modernist, did not became a member of this trend.

He died in Barcelona in 1936.
