Avelino Pi is one of the pioneers of sports photography in Spain. His career began exactly with the Olympic Games of Munich in 1972. Since then, Avelino Pi has been a witness of five more Olympic encounters, both summer and of winter: Sarajevo, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Sydney and Athens.

This trajectory has permitted to capture the changes in the sporting world and even became an official photographer of the International Olympic Committee during the ‘80’s. However, his experience does not circumscribe to the Olympic Games: as such there are not many sports that have stayed out of Avelino Pi´s view. The professionals and fans of photography will be surprised with the Pi´s method of work and the tools that are used. Avelino Pi has always looked for the quality over everything; the clearness and the essence of the competition, the elementary moment of the improvement and the effort.

The retrospective exposition Avellino Pi, sport photography is also an energetic trip in the big moments of the sport during last four decades. In it we can find the big international figures that have marked an era, like an authentic Hall of Fame. As well, it is also an unbeatable occasion to revise the figure of the Spanish sportsmen who have seen the state sport grow and placing it in the world.

In these years, sport has turned into a mass phenomenon and, in this period of modernisation, the target of Avelino Pi has stayed attentive to leave steadfastness of the transformations. Nevertheless, he has never neglected the emotions, the intimate nature of the sport, the sparks of success and the reaction to the defeat, beyond the well-known faces and the evolution of the aesthetics. Precisely for that, his images manage to overcome all the spatial and temporary borders, to convert itself in to a reflection of the human condition.
