It was no accident that the sinewy frontman, Bobby Gillespie, and his band chose to take their name from the Primal Scream theory of psychotherapy. After debuting with the psychedelic 'Sonic Flower Groove' (1987), these fans of The Stooges and MC5 didn’t take long to come along with 'Primal Scream' (1989). Shortly afterwards, Andy Weatherall remixed their 'I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have', giving it a new feel halfway between indie and acid-house. Gillespie and company decided to follow this lead and revolutionised their sound, making indie music history along the way, with 'Screamadelica' (1991), a glorious, iconic album for a generation of avid fans of beats, pills and riffs. For 'Give Out But Don't Give Up' (1994) they were joined by Mani, from The Stone Roses, and Kevin Shields, from My Bloody Valentine. 'XTRMNTR' (2000), a vehement protest-album of fierce guitars and perverse rhythms, and 'Evil Heat' (2002), a complex musical cross-over which featured Kate Moss and Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain (don’t forget Gillespie played drums on 'Psychocandy'), heralded the bands arrival in the new millennium. In 2006, having been together for 20 years, they released “Riot City Blues”, an album of visceral speed-fuelled rock’n’roll. Once more unto the breach in 2008, they are making a new album featuring Lovefoxx, the girl who shouts herself hoarse with CSS. The primal scream is still as deafening as ever.
