Brooklyn slang has a new spokeswoman who holds court to the rhythm of muddy synths and beats from the school of Timbaland. The devastating presence of Santogold is rocking radio waves from Miami to Hanoi and the internet is rapidly turning her into a new hip-pop legend. And here’s why: Nicknamed Santogold by a friend in the 80's, Santi White worked for years in A&R for Epic Records before becoming a R&B producer. After that, she fronted the ska-punk band Stiffed, accompanied Björk on tour and collaborated with Lily Allen. Her fans include the likes of Bowie, Michael Jackson and Gaddafi (!). Along with producer Johnny Rodeo, she forms the nucleus of a 'band' which has no permanent members but whose debut, 'Santogold' (2008), brought together Disco D, Switch, Diplo, Radioclit, the original drummer from the Bad Brains, Naeem from Spank Rock and M.I.A. In fact, she’s often compared to the author of 'Arular' (as well as to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and to Gang Gang Dance) because she too does her bit for demanding global justice for the third world.
