Three contemporary artists reinterpret the work of the Catalan artist in the Underground Stations closer to his principal works in another initiative about his 150 anniversary. Gaudi in XXI centuryThanks to the countless activities of Gaudi's anniversary, Barcelona is internationally remembered by one of its principal figures in the world of arts. Public institutions and private entities have been celebrating the Gaudi year, enriching the city.
Now the Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona (TMB) and the Delvico Bates group (Creator, manager and commercial promoter of project GSXXI) also have associated themselves to contribute towards this long list of cultural activities around the gaudinian work.
A reinterpretation of the architect’s career in charge of three city artists (Josep Mascaró, Marc Jesús and
Philip Stanton) who propose to remember Gaudi's legacy in such common places as the Underground, recreating in their own way, the artistic expression of the famous Catalan artist.
Under the name Gaudí Century XXI – Temporary Museum in the Barcelona Underground (GSXXI), will be in operation between June and November of the current year and will offer the city dweller an interesting itinerary through the stations near the most representative works of Gaudí.
A Temporary Museum as a cultural activity in places of massive circulation of people and paradigmatic of the daily life of the Barcelonians. The initiative adds to the scores of others activities that fill the city with Gaudi’s Icon, who 150 years after his birth in Reus, is present all over the Barcelona of the XXI Century.
The Underground project was only possible due to the efforts of some sponsors who this way give their contribution towards this homage. The “Gaudi circuit” is a revolutionary concept: The idea of using the Underground as a museum.
The stations of
Sagrada Familia (L2), Diagonal (L5) and
Passeig de Gràcia (L3) stand out in an integral way. Their platforms escalators and pavements will completely be integrated into the work of each of the plastic artists chosen for their relationship to Gaudi to his work or to the city. The aim is to convert each station into a work of art. In
Passeig de Gràcia (L3) the originals of the artists will be exhibited, the adjoining station will serve as support of the exhibition and will furthermore direct the public towards the principal stations through the use of informative panels. The total circuit will encompass the 10 stations closer to the most representative works by the architect.
