Lover of Barcelona, where he has his most loyal public, Almódovar gained his first Oscar with ´All About My Mother´, a film shot in our city

Pedro Almodóvar was born in Calzada de Calatrava (a Ciudad Real province) on 24 of September 1949. At the age of eight, his family migrated to Extremadura and there he studied high school, in the Salesian and Franciscan years, respectively. His accidental religious education made him lose faith in God. During this time, in Cáceres, he started to go the cinema compulsively.

At 16 he went to Madrid alone and penniless, but with a very firm project: study and make films.

With the impossibility of enrolling in the Escuela Oficial de Cine (Official School of Cinema), that had just closed and even though they were living through a dictatorship, Madrid assumed for the provincial adolescent the city of culture and freedom.

He fulfilled multiple and sporadic works, but he could not purchase his first camera Super 8 until getting a job in the Compañía Telefónica Nacional de España (National Telecommunications Company of Spain), where he worked for twelve years as an administration assistant.

In these years his real profession blossomed, when he was in contact with a social class that he has not yet got to know for real: the Spanish middle class of the start of the consumer epoch, with all its dramas, miseries and bravery. All learning ground for the future director.

During this era he wrote stories (some of which have been published), did theatre with the Los Goliardos group, shot films in Super 8, collaborated with diverse underground magazines and formed part of the parodic punk-rock group, Almodóvar y Mcnamara.

He had the luck of his first film premiering with the political Spanish transaction. A year and half later of risky shooting in 16mm, in 1980 he released "Pepi, Luci, Bom..." Since then, cinema filled his life. He directed and lived sufficiently to continue inventing stories that were alive.

His films are shown in cinemas all over the world and has reached international stardom with an Oscar for best foreign film from the Academy of Hollywood, for ´All About My Mother´, filmed in Barcelona.
