The Portuguese fado songstress, of Catalonian ancestry, lived part of her youth in Barcelona, where she has the faithful following of her legion of fans
Born in Oporto (Portugal), Mísia came to Barcelona, the homeland of her mother and maternal grandmother, in her early twenties. There, she encountered two different worlds -the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, which was an enriching experience for her.
Mísia, herself born into an Iberian culture, does not diminish the importance of that period. She lived her childhood and adolescence with her mother and was deeply marked by a bohemian and artistic environment - her Grandmother was a music-hall star, her mother a classical Spanish dance ballerina.
A feeling for changes in different musical cultures developed and consolidated in the young Mísia . After this first critical encounter, Mísia 's fascination for Fado lead her to consider this as her real musical roots, the basic link between herself, her identity and her origins. After returning to Portugal she strives to valorize that musical expression through the prevalence of the poem. Some of the most prestigious contemporary composers and writers, such as Lidia Jorge, Agustina Bessa-Luis, Jose Saramago and Lobo Antunes, have co-operated with her discographic works.
This ambitious project is part of the continuous musical adaptation of the Fado seen through other musical cultures. The uniqueness of Mísia 's artistic project lies in the conception of the Fado as an urban song (thus attaining the great universal emotions), so being at the same time both local and universal. With Mísia , this attitude transcends the conventional barriers naturally, resulting from a frontal approach to a language considered hermetic.
Mísia 's peculiar stage presence facilitates the acceptance of her work by the moved public. Her image and attitude create an atmosphere of mystery and proper to the great performers. In ‘97, Mísia received the prestigious "Grand Prix de l'Acadamie Charles Cros" for her previous album.
