Architect, interior designer and town planner, Lluis Domenech i Montaner (or Muntaner), is one of the names most relevant of the Modernist movement at worldwide level. Humanist, academic, historian and heraldist, this Barcelonan of pure blood, also passed through politics
He was born in Barcelona in 1850, where he studied Exact Sciences, Natural Physics, with maximum qualifications. In Madrid he does two Engineering courses and finally he decides on Architecture, where he excels. He obtains a degree in the Escuela Especial de Arquitectura el (Special School of Architecture) in 1873.
He returns to Barcelona, finds a Catalan architecture of his own, with the magazine "La Renaixença". His political performance and his job as investigator took him three times to the presidency of Ateneo Barcelonés – Barcelona Association - (1898, 1911 y 1913). He commenced his politic involvement at an early age and finished dedicating himself to the investigation of history.
The Universal Exposition of Barcelona in 1888, gave him the occasion to construct his first works that made him popular, like the restaurant in Ciutadella Park. In its place, he installed subsequently, together with his associate Antoni Maria Gallissà, a workshop for perfecting the decorative arts applied to architecture.
He constructed monumental buildings, with a very personal style, made of brick, metal, forged and decorated with varnished polychrome ceramic, with a profusion of floral themes, like for example the Palau de la Músic Catalana or the Hospital de Sant Pau, with the collaboration of Lluis Bru i Salelles.
His History studies were directed to determine unique characteristics of Catalan art.
