From the 60's onwards the Nederlands Dans Theater gained itself as place as one of the world's great dance companies and rapidly distinguished itself by its extraordinary creativity under the leadership of B. Harkarvy, Van Manen, G. Tetley and, more recently, Jirí Kylián. The company is bringing to the Liceu one of the core works in its repertory, Jirí Kylián's Symphony of Psalms (1978). The choreographer sees Stravinsky's music as a dramatic festival in which the rhythms unleash waves of emotion and pathos on a materialistic world without pity where people are seeking reasons for living. Kylián aims above all at balance and transparency of gesture, overall sobriety and the integration of elements as far apart as folklore and neo-expressionism.
