The new Botanical Garden of Barcelona opened in April 1999 and is situated in the Parc de Montjuïc. It was projected by a team formed by the architects Carlos Ferrater y Josep Lluís Canosa, the landscape architect Bet Figueras, the horticulturist Artur Bossy and the biologist Joan Pedrola.

It offers repose, tranquility and, more importantly, one of the most desired views of Barcelona. On a clear sky, you can see the whole city, the sea, the Baix Llobregat, Collserola and the Sierra del Garraf.

It is designed to invite to take a trip around the world through the vegetation, representing ´fitoepisodios´ (name that receives the artificial representation of natural communities), from the Mediterranean climate. The trip commences in the northern hemisphere, where the Cuenca Mediterránea is the region most represented largely, and continuing the journey till the Californian coasts of the Mediterranean climate. Next is the introduction to the southern hemisphere, where you can visit the Mediterranean Chile, South Africa and the two Meditteranean regions of South Australia.

The Mediterranean climate is characterised by a seasonal mark, with concentrated rain in spring and autumn, the hot dry summers and the moderate winters. We find these characteristics in strip comprised between the latitudes 30º and 40º in Australia, California, South Africa, Chile and Cuenca del Mar Mediterráneo.
