Supper club was the designation coined in the 20's and 30's, during the prohibition in the USA in order to escape legal persecution and to illegally enjoy liquor behind this euphemism.
The restrictions about alcohol and drinking changed, but the "supper" survived. These clubs are part of the lifestyle of San Francisco, the city which is the maximal reference for the American liberal culture.
Inaugurated at the end of September '04 by a couple arrived from the Barbary Coast, Rubí is a different bar, at least from what we are accustomed to in Bcn: it is a Californian concept of bar plus
restaurant, introduced in the city which the owners defined as the "San Francisco" of Europe.
The staff is as cosmopolitan as the public. Catalans and foreigners wait attentively at the table, even when the house is full, there is always someone in attendance, since service is the philosophy underlying this "supper".
The ambiance is homely and the decoration very fine conferring warmth through the predominately reds in the sofas and walls.
The classic and glamorous environment is not synonymous with elitism, even though it isn’t by, any means, a place open to all sorts of customers.
There are a dozen of cocktails in the list, of which Rubí Royal is the house specialty, a secret of rubi colour, on the basis of a mixture of juices, liqueurs and cava, the Catalan regional champagne.
Brazilian music, funk, soul and jazz are played and occasionally there is a guest dj. The "strong" days stretch from Thursday to Sunday. From 7 to 10 in the evening there is "happy hour" and from eleven onwards it is filled with essentially young costumers (25 to 45), 40% locals and 60% tourists or Barcelona established foreigners.
