After the experience of L'Ou com Balla, the neighbour just across the street, Teresa Ferri and Jordi Romero initiated the cuisine of «other cultures», over two decades ago after having travelled all over the Mediterranean for months and months, getting to know people and peoples and making acquaintance with expert cooks. After visiting India, Burma and Indonesia the time was ripe for inaugurating El Pepre Blau (“The Blue Pepper”) in 1998, culminating the achievement of the syntheses tradition/creation based on traditional recipes.
Indeed, the secret for the success of this restaurant lies on the concept of its «home» cuisine, the quality of the produce, its truly liberal servings and a very efficient service with a friendly attitude.
Located in a XVII Century setting, wrapped in a warm atmosphere, where the selected musical background enables conversation to occur, this place has rightly become a romantic reference venue.
Not surprisingly, the list is seldom varied, since everyone seems to ask for «that dish» again and again. What does not necessarily mean that new additions are not included to surprise the habitués, new and well planned treats being always in the offering...
For the lighter pallet, we propose the «combinados» of Mediterranean salads (a whole trip), the Indian Tabuleh, the lukewarm spinach salad with Rocquefort cheese ice-cream, the Five tapas tapadas (each from a different country), the three Carpaccios or the Three Timbals (kettle drums). Yes, this is indeed nouvelle cuisine.
We also recommend other plates more consistent such as the Pastel.la de Fez, the ox la Bourguignone, the spicy curry like in Kerala and the the Tajine del Atlas, like the two different ways that that cod can be cooked and two secret recipes of fresh salted Foie that only can be described visiting this restaurant
The desserts are the happy ending and stretch from the Latin Tart, daily made, to the chocolate textures. The surprise format Piña Colada, the Tiramisu, lauded by the even most exacting Italians, among many other offers, according to the day.
The wine list features about 40 different options, priced for every taste (from €13,00 to €25,00) being often changed, always trying to have the best denominations on the basis of the quality/price axiom. Whenever justifiable there are offers of "wines of the author", of selected stocks. This is not surprising if you bear in mind that the wine list is the «teacher's pet» of the Chef.
BarceloCa readers receive a glass of Cava, Kir Royal (like in Paris) or Spiryt (like the Valencians do) and a surprise treat.
