The entry of the torch into the stadium and the lap run by the bearers is the climax of the Olympic ritual. Next to the Marathon Gate stands the archer who has to shoot the arrow, lit by the torch, at the cauldron atop the gate.
This is a moment of high emotion, heightened by the music of Angelo Badalamenti. For the first time at the Games, an arrow lit by an archer will bear the Olympic fire, symbol of the strength of the sporting ideal, to the place where it will preside, day and night, over the competitions until the close.
