The Vila Olímpica (Olympic Village) was constructed, originally, to accommodate the athletes that were installed in Barcelona to participate in the Olympic Games of 1992. Currently, it is in the residential district of Sant Martí.
Both its initial design and its later transformation through the Olympiad, the team was integrated by
Oriol Bohigas,
Josep Martorell,
David Mackay and Albert Puigdomènech. Its work also included, the projection of several parks (Nova Icària Park, Cascades Park the Port Olympic Park), the renewal of the Nova Icària Beach and, finally, the transformation of this zone of the coast of the city.
We find here the Port Olympic, flanked by the two highest towers of Spain (the Mapfre Tower and the Hotel Arts), and a lovely seafront with the most varied gastronomic offer and of night leisure.
It is necessary to also emphasise the Plaça dels Voluntaris, the Golden Fish (one of the sculptures most typical of the zone) or the Gardens of Atlanta (with the Can Folch chimney), between other attractions.
Completed for the Olympic Games, the quarter took some years in starting, but at present it is already an active zone provided with services and activities. Also, for some time it now, it has a tramcar.
Between the public equipments that exist in this zone, the stands out
Universitat Pompeu Fabra, whose library occupies the singular building of the Dipòsit of les Aigües (Water Depot).
