The Decorative Arts Museum of Barcelona was inaugurated in 1932, in the Royal Palace of Pedrables, by the then President of the Generalitat (Regional Government) of Catalonia, Francesc Macià. In the beginning, it was organised in rooms that grouped objects according to different criteria: artistic technique (ceramic, glass, etc), typologies (coaches, furniture, clothing, etc) and styles (romantic room, Isabelina - Elizabethan, of the Spanish Renaissance, etc).

The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) determined the transfer of the objects from the museum to Olot, so to guarantee its security.

When the objects where returned to Barcelona in 1949, the Palace of the Virreina was converted into a new headquarters of the museum, until when in 1985 it was transferred again to the Palace of Pedralbes, where it remained closed for ten years.

In the spring of 1995, the museum reopened and opened its doors with an important innovation: the incorporation of a collection of Spanish industrial design. This deed made it the first museum of the whole state that includes a large collection of designer industrial objects in its permanent exhibition.
